Aspire to the Stars: the gifts of Arlene Sagan

March 3, 2016 Leave a Comment

The late Arlene Sagan, the second music director for the Berkeley Community Chorus & Orchestra, always encouraged us to “aspire to the stars.” Karen Davison and I worked together on this documentary, filming Arlene through the fall 2005 season. The chorus performed Francis Poulenc’s Gloria, a favorite of Arlene’s. Aspire to the Stars was premiered at Arlene’s retirement gathering in 2011.

Over the past 10 years I’ve done quite a bit of work with BCCO. I love working with images and music, integrating music and sound in a way that carries but doesn’t overwhelm the story. The BCCO projects have allowed me to have fun with stories in which the music is primary, honing my music editing skills as well as enjoying the process of finding the rhythm of the images themselves.
